Sawtooth waves energised early electronic music.

Our name honours their vibration, resonance, and dynamism.

Iconic songs like “I Feel Love” by Donna Summer in 1977 (shout out Giorgio Moroder), “Das Modell” by Kraftwerk in 1978, “Are ‘Friends’ Electric?” by Gary Numan in 1979, “Just Can’t Get Enough” by Depeche Mode in 1981, and “Jump” by Van Halen in 1983.

Even better, a sawtooth wave linearly rises or falls, only to shoot back to the start, much like our monetisation model.

Best of all, our founder, Scott Truitt, lived in a sawtooth-roofed warehouse in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio when he came up with the first ideas for what would become Sawtooth. Here’s the story:

it all started in 1999

Whilst living in the US, Scott applied for an open role managing the website of his favourite record label in London.

He designed an artist-centred, community-focused, commerce-embedded experience. He proposed adding a membership fee and a pre-release purchase plan.

It was more than a website plan; it was a new way to sell music and support his favourite artists.

Yes. In 1999.

and came together in 2003

At the height of file sharing, the rise of the iPod, and the birth of the iTunes Music Store, Scott had an insight: Music should be freely available yet fairly priced per play.

He wanted to share his favourite songs without stealing from his favourite artists and hear what his friends loved.

His ideas and insights from 1999 and 2003 form the core of our business model.

but then, a diversion

Scott moved to San Francisco in 2004 and managed platform product orgs at legendary enterprise software companies in the 2010s.

He was recruited by a top startup in 2020 and moved to Berlin in 2021. He was recruited by another scaleup and moved to London in 2022.

Here’s where he honed his strategic product, design, engineering, operational, and GTM expertise.

life comes full circle

After two years in London, the call to work on Sawtooth was impossible to resist. Scott left his former life and founded the company in April 2024.

Sawtooth is the culmination of a lifetime of love for music and technology and a deep desire to give back to the artists and labels that bring him so much joy.

Sawtooth is his passion and purpose.

Our mindset comes from another source of inspiration: the humble beaver.

Scientists call them “ecosystem engineers” because they reshape their environment and increase habitat diversity, allowing more species to live in the new landscape.

It’s who they are. It’s what they do.

Beavers were almost hunted to extinction. Now they’re thriving in London and across the UK and Europe, rebuilding ecosystems that had collapsed without them.

Does that not sound like exactly what music needs right now? That’s what we’re bringing to life with Sawtooth.

Made with in London.
